Veedersburg plans Scarecrow Festival

VEEDERSBURG, Ind. — Town council members heard Tuesday from Crystal Brewer with the Veedersburg Revitalization Association that a scarecrow festival is planned for Oct., 26.

Brewer said, “The festival will be a fun day of sorts with a goal of bringing people to Veedersburg.”

The revitalization group is working to get organizations involved in the festival. Events during the festival could include a scarecrow king and queen contest, cake walk, car show and a hayride.

Fire department personnel will sponsor a fish fry that evening. The revitalization group will conduct an informational meeting at 6:30 p.m. EDT Aug. 6 in the town hall for anyone interested in having a booth at the festival.

In other business, town council members:

Heard from street and water superintendent Paul Keeling that he would like council members to consider raising the fee for the installation of a new water meter. Keeling said the current fee of $750 is not covering the expense of materials and installation. He suggested raising the fee to $1,200. Keeling was asked to figure the cost of residential and commercial hook ups including materials and labor.

Discussed how the new lights along the town’s trail would be funded. Council members want the TIF district to pay for materials and the town would pay for labor. Clerk/treasurer Kathy Pugh will check with Indiana State Board of Accounts to see how the town can pay for the lighting.

Heard a request from Cindy Bower and Kathy Jarvis with the Potawatomi Festival Committee to stage the Potawatomi parade in Veedersburg on Sept. 22. Council members will consider the request.

Heard from Councilman Tim Shumaker that Curt Rontow of Masterguard contacted him in regard to the noise recent complaints against Masterguard. Rontow told Shumaker that Masterguard wants to be a good neighbor and is looking into some type of sound barriers. In the meantime, the trailers will be moved away from the back so the noise is not as bad. Rontow added it was impossible for the chrome paint chips on the nearby houses to be from his facility.

Passed Ordinance 03-13 that is an amendment to the zoning ordinance regarding side yard fencing. If the neighbors are in agreement, a fence can be installed on the property line. If the neighbors cannot agree on the fence, the fence must be installed at least 18 inches from the property line.

Passed Ordinance 04-13 that reduces the speed limit on Sugar Street between Second Street and Harper Street from 30 mph to 20 mph. The ordinance also includes the installation of a “Children at Play” sign on Sugar Street.
