Tilton to gain new business

TILTON — The village will soon be home to a Discount Tobacco WareHouse store later this year.

Tom Ware, president of the 15-store chain, made a presentation to the village board on Thursday night. Ware said his company plans to lease the 4,000 square-foot former Bob Campbell TV and Appliance building at the corner of Georgetown Road and Ross Lane.

According to Ware, the business will sell every type of tobacco product available. Ware also plans on opening a gaming room with five gaming machines. In order to obtain a state permit for the gaming machines, Ware said he will have to obtain a liquor license.

"We are not going to be operating a bar," Ware explained to the board. "We will have bottled beer and wine available to our customers that are playing the gaming machines."

Ware said the store will not be selling packaged beer or wine.

"We have found out that there are some gaming customers who do not like the 'bar atmosphere,' and prefer a quiet and clean place to play the machines," Ware said. "We are aiming our business at those people."

Ware said while his stores do sell tobacco, there is no smoking in any of them. He plans to install a drive-up window on the east side of the building for the tobacco customers.

The hours of operation will follow those allowed by the liquor license. Ware anticipates the store will employ seven or eight employees.

According to Ware, his stores normally have sales around $1 million annually. The chain is headquartered in Jacksonville.

Board members gave their tentative approval to Ware's plan.

In other board action, trustees:

+ Approved economic incentive payment to Vermilion Chevrolet of $12,000.

+ Learned from Mayor David Phillips that the village spent $30,000 in snowstorm related costs.

+ Approved the annexation of the Vermilion Vocational Education Delivery System (VOTEC) property for the purpose of connecting to the village sewer system.

+ Approved the annexation of 17 properties on 12th, 13th, Gleason and Hodge Streets to the village.
