Village Mall to regain book store

Book World will fill a local niche

DANVILLE — The Village Mall will see another new tenant in late August. Book World will be opening in the former Waldenbooks space.

Book World is an independent chain of more than 45 full-service book stores located throughout Wisconsin, Michigan, Illinois, Iowa and Minnesota.

The 3,100-square-foot store will be a “quality, full-service book store,” said Village Mall Manager Cindy Compton.

It will have books, greeting cards, calendars, some toys and other items, Compton said. She said some stores in the mall, such as County Market, already have some of those items, but Book World will add in some of those areas as well.

Compton said the store will fill a niche in the community.

Antoine Tines, vice president of retail operations for Book World, said the store is a full-service book store. It doesn’t have used books and doesn’t do buy-backs.

The store is similar to Barnes and Noble and Books-a-Million, he said, but added that Book World is smaller and community-oriented. Tines said the book and magazine selections offer something for everyone.

There are basic stock books that customers continue to like, in addition to new bestseller books and classics, he said.

“We have a pretty robust children’s section,” Tines added, about the children’s books and toys, etc., including Melissa and Doug brand items.

Book World is expanding into communities that once had a book store.

“The mall contacted us,” Tines said, adding a deal has been in the works for a while for the store to come to the mall.

The store has on average six to 10 employees, and sometimes more, Tines said.

Renovations will soon begin to replace the carpet, put in shelving and “spruce it up,” he said. If all goes well, Tines said the store could open by the last weekend in August.

The store chain, based in Appleton, Wis., has been family-owned since 1976.

In Illinois, Book World is located in Forsyth, Galena, Freeport, Moline and Sterling. Book World offers an extensive selection of hard cover and paperback books for all ages. Along with current bestsellers, customers can find books in every category with a strong emphasis on children’s, regional and nature titles.

It also offers a selection of more than 3,000 magazines, toys, games, puzzles, stuffed animals, greeting cards, calendars, trading cards, newspapers and much more.

Waldenbooks closed in the Village Mall more than three years ago. Another book store, A Novel Idea, filled the space, too.
