Adult mentors needed

COVINGTON, Ind. — The Community Action Program of Western Indiana is recruiting adult mentors for the Fountain County Mentoring Program.

Mentors are asked to spend 10 hours a month with their youth and be willing to commit for one year.

The program concentrates on “at-risk” youth ages 6-18 years old with primary focus on those in their early teens. Often these youth are exhibiting poor grades, poor school attendance and disciplinary problems at school as well as minor infractions with the law.

Once a referral is made, youth are matched with an appropriate adult mentor. Matches are made based on the interests and needs of the youth and the interests and skill set of the mentor. Mentors undergo extensive background checks and receive initial orientation and training on how to be effective mentors. Ongoing training is offered as well.

Those interested in becoming a mentor for an at-risk youth in Fountain County, should call director Kathy Walker at (765) 793-4881 or e-mail her at kwalker@capwi.org
