The Reader’s Route seeks volunteers to help at its annual 2013 Scrabble Tournament on April 6-7.
The event, which is hosted by the Reader’s Route as a fundraiser for the adult literacy program at Danville Area Community College, draws about 70 participants each year.
The Reader’s Route, operated through DACC’s Adult Education Division, recruits and trains volunteers to help adults improve reading skills and increase the literacy rate in the area.
“We’re needing two to five additional volunteers for the tournament,” said Scott Heatherton, Reader’s Route coordinator.
“A few people who were instrumental in the past at assisting us with the Scrabble Tournament, because of health and personal reasons, cannot help us this year with the Scrabble tournament,” he said.
“A few of our volunteers, in fact, were the original inspiration for the tournament, but they have chosen to move on. They have other things going on or they’ve retired,” he added.
Heatherton said the volunteers are needed for the two-day tournament to help with the hospitality room as well as prior to the event to help line up donations from corporate and individual sponsors in the community.
Anyone interested in volunteering to assist with the annual Scrabble Tournament should call Reader’s Route coordinator Scott Heatherton at 443-8785 or Laura Williams, director of adult education, at 443-8782.
