Retail, fast food projects move along

DANVILLE — With construction continuing on various projects around the city, residents still have to wait four months for Meijer, but a shorter time for some others.

According to Vermilion Advantage CEO and President Vicki Haugen, Meijer is targeting the second week of November to open.

Haugen was still trying to confirm T.J. Maxx’s opening. The latest news has just been that the store was to open by early fall.

According to city officials, building permits for the project expire later this month, but those are regularly extended.

Over on the fast food, restaurant side, McDonald’s at Bowman Avenue and Main Street is expected to open in early August. Hiring has started for McDonald’s.

As for Jimmy John’s, it is still coming, too. Seth Hobbs, owner/manager for Jimmy John’s, said through an e-mail he couldn’t comment yet on an exact opening date. He was still getting bids in and is to choose a contractor.

According to Chris Milliken, urban services manager with the city, Jimmy John’s has signed a lease at Plaza 31 at 3100 N. Vermilion St., across from the Village Mall. The city has construction plans for the sandwich shop.

Milliken said he’d think construction could start soon, with intentions to open in the fall.

Jimmy John’s will be hiring about 35 employees.

More than 10 years ago the fast-food gourmet sandwich shop was previously located in Danville on North Gilbert Street.

In addition to this week’s announcement about Book World coming to the Village Mall in August, the mall also will see Burlington, a leading national off-price retail chain, opening in the fall, possibly by October.

Construction is in full swing, with an anticipated fall opening, according to Village Mall Manager Cindy Compton.

Burlington posted signs on the doors stating it is coming soon and to apply for jobs online, according to Compton.

The new 50,232 square foot store will bring about 45-50 new jobs to Danville and will be one of 28 Burlington locations in Illinois.

Burlington, which is getting away from being called Burlington Coat Factory, offers brand-name merchandise for the entire family and home with savings of up to 65 percent off department store prices.

The new location will feature ladies’ dresses, suits, sportswear, juniors, accessories, menswear, family footwear and children’s clothing. It will also include furniture and accessories for babies at Baby Depot, home décor and gifts and coats.

“We are thrilled to open a new Burlington in the Danville community, bringing jobs to the neighborhood and providing residents with a valued shopping experience,” said Thomas Kingsbury, Burlington president and chief executive officer, in a press release.

Burlington has more than 500 stores in 44 states and Puerto Rico.
