---- — DANVILLE — Two people escaped without injury from a burning home during the weekend.
City firefighters were called to 1205 Sherman St. just before 7:30 a.m. Sunday.
Danville Assistant Fire Chief Larry Jaggers said people were sleeping when a smoke detector began to go off, alerting them to the blaze and allowing them to get out safely.
Firefighters arriving on scene reported smoke coming from all sides of the two-story home. Jaggers said the fire has been determined to have started in the basement of the residence, although a cause remains under investigation.
The fire is considered accidental at this point, he added.
The biggest part of the blaze was knocked down within about 15 minutes, Jaggers said. Firefighters remained on the scene for a little more than two hours.
Damages as a result of the fire are estimated at $65,000 — $50,000 to the home and $15,000 to the contents inside.
