DANVILLE — Women of Color No. 10’s 17th Annual Cotillion Scholarship Ball will be Saturday at New Life Church of Faith banquet center, 1421 N. Bowman Ave.
Doors open at 5:30 p.m., with dinner from 6-7 p.m. and presentations at 7:30 p.m.
This year’s theme is “This Is It … Poise, Grace and Talent.” Tickets are $30 each and $15 for children ages 8-10. No one under age 8 will be admitted. All tickets are sold in advance — there will be no ticket sales at the door — and can be purchased by any club member or debutante.
This year’s preparation began in October with the screening process. The organization accepted 12 debutantes and introduced them at their Introductory Tea in November. Later the organization lost three debutantes due to other personal commitments. This year’s Cotillion will feature nine debutantes, all seniors from Danville High School.
Criteria for being selected a debutante include being active in their schools, churches and communities, and being a graduating senior with plans to attend an institution of higher learning. Debutantes must be academically sound, must be single with no children, and a resident of Vermilion County.
The event takes six to eight months of preparation. Most people have no idea of the amount of work and commitment that goes into a Cotillion. Each debutante solicited ads from individuals and businesses for the Cotillion Souvenir Booklet.
In addition to rehearsals once a week, the Debutantes also attended a health and fitness demonstration, a session on how to dress for success, an etiquette session and a beauty and makeup consultation.
All proceeds will be used to provide academic scholarships to the nine debutantes. The debutante who raises the most money in ads and ticket sales will be crowned Ms. Entrepreneur. She will receive the highest scholarship and an additional monetary award. Another debutante will be voted Ms. Congeniality by her peers.
