NWS confirms tornado damage near Westville

DANVILLE — The National Weather Service has confirmed a tornado momentarily touched down near Westville Friday night.

A line of storms marched east across the county late Friday night, bringing storms from the north edge to the southern tip of Vermilion County.

Rick Harper, severe weather manager for the Vermilion County Emergency Management Agency, issued a statement late Monday afternoon indicating the storms included a one-minute touch-down of an F1 tornado.

According to the National Weather Service in Lincoln, the tornado — with winds between 90-95 mph — began its east-northeast track in a field around 11:25 p.m. Friday a little more than 2 ½ miles southeast of Westville.

The tornado traveled a half-mile, crossing County Road 1850E before encountering a property.

The winds, according to the National Weather Service, pulled a garage up from its foundation, pushing it 10 feet onto the car inside. The home there also was damaged, as well as a large barn and another garage. Trees on the property were splintered.

The twister dissipated just east of the property. No injuries were reported.

The damage to either building was not announced by Vermilion County EMA in the hours or days following the storm system that crossed the county.
