Local man dies in morning car crash

ST. JOSPEH — A Vermilion County man died Friday morning as the result of a two-vehicle collision just outside of St. Joseph.

Illinois State Police confirmed the crash took place at 7:23 a.m. Friday on U.S. Route 150 at the Glover Overpass, located just east of St. Joseph.

Reports indicate James Davis II, a 58-year-old Fithian man, was killed in the crash after he was ejected from his vehicle, a 2009 Smart Car.

The other driver, Colleen Shields, 55, of St. Joseph, was extricated from her 2007 Ford Escape and taken to Carle Foundation Hospital in Urbana for treatment, police indicated.

A spokeswoman for Carle Foundation Hospital said they had no information as of mid-afternoon Friday.

According to state police, Davis was westbound approaching the Glover Overpass from the east when he traveled into the path of Shields, who was traveling eastbound on the overpass.

Davis was pronounced dead after 8 a.m. at the scene of the accident by Champaign County Coroner Duane Northrup.
