One man was taken into custody following a high-speed car chase through the east side of Danville during the weekend.
Danville police were contacted just before 5 p.m. Saturday by law enforcement in Fountain County, Ind., notifying them of a pursuit headed into Danville.
Danville Police Deputy Director Doug Miller said city officers encountered the vehicle going westbound at a high rate of speed near the 1900 block of East Main Street.
City police turned around and pursued the fast-moving vehicle to East Main Street and Bowman Avenue where the vehicle was lost. The pursuit was picked up in the 800 block of North Bowman, Miller said, where the vehicle was driving fast enough to go airborne as it crossed over railroad tracks and, at one point, drove onto the sidewalk.
The chase continued east on Voorhees Street, where one officer involved said the car was pulling away from him as he drove 75 mph. The vehicle led onto U.S. Route 136 and eventually to Interstate 74 where Miller said officers reported speeds of up to 120 mph.
At that point, Miller said officers terminated the pursuit due to safety concerns on the interstate.
Then, around 6:15 p.m. Saturday, a Vermilion County deputy stopped the same vehicle in the 1200 block of Garden Drive. The driver, later identified as Avonta Lowe, 23, of the 800 block of North Franklin Street — fled on foot but was caught and arrested by the deputy.
Lowe was booked at the Public Safety Building jail on charges of aggravated fleeing/eluding police, reckless driving and driving after revocation along with other traffic citations in connection with the chase, Miller said.
