Pedestrian killed on Illinois Route 49

---- — DANVILLE — No charges have been filed as a result of a fatal traffic accident Thursday involving a pedestrian.

The crash happened just after 9:15 p.m. Thursday on Illinois Route 49, almost a half-mile north of County Road 2000N.

According to state police who handled the accident, a man was walking south in the roadway when a he was struck northbound SUV driven by a 35-year-old woman.

Vermilion County Coroner Peggy Johnson identified the man late Friday morning as Matthew Wheeler of Champaign.

The 29-year-old Wheeler was pronounced dead at 11:22 p.m. Thursday at the scene. An autopsy was scheduled for Friday.

Also on Thursday, one driver was injured in a two-car collision along Illinois Route 1 just south of Hoopeston.

The driver, Garrett Ator, 24, of State Line, Ind., was taken to Carle Foundation Hospital for treatment. He also was cited on charges of DUI, improper lane usage and illegal transportation of alcohol.

According to state police, Ator was driving an SUV north on Illinois Route 1 when he swerved into the southbound lane and into the path of a semi-tractor trailer driven by Jill Steffens, 56, no address listed. As a result, Ator struck the semi on the driver’s side.

The SUV sustained heavy front end damage while the driver’s side of the semi was damaged as well.

Steffens was not injured in the accident. Both vehicles were towed from the scene.
