Hoopeston OKs property tax levy

HOOPESTON — Hoopeston Area school board members unanimously approved the estimated property tax levy of $3,150,500 for the year 2013, a 9.18 percent increase more than the previous year.

Mark Eighner, district treasurer, said he figured what the estimated assessed value of property would be in order to “capture any extra dollars” for the school district.

Superintendent Hank Hornbeck added, “I would rather err on the side of safety (regarding property taxes).”

The next step to adopting the tax levy will be to update it at the October board meeting, if necessary, and set a tax levy hearing date. During the November board meeting, the tax levy will be adopted.

In other school board business, board members approved the administrative salary compensation report for the 2013-2014 school year. Emily Brown presented the District Continuous Improvement Plan to the school board. It also was approved unanimously.

n Karla Coon, director of Hoopeston’s DACC Higher Learning Center, reported on the first week of DACC classes at the new Hoopeston campus. A little under 80 students were attending and plans are already under way for the Spring 2014 classes with Nov. 1 and Dec. 6 as service days to enroll. She added DACC is “working on an associate’s degree in dual enrollment” for Hoopeston students. When the students graduated high school, they will already have an associate’s degree, she said.

n Learned the six day enrollment figures show an increased of 31 students in 2013- 2014 school year from last year’s figures which does not include Rossville students or the Care students.

n Learned the week of Sept. 30th is Homecoming Week.

n Approved hiring Ron Cade as sixth-grade boys basketball coach for the 2013-2014 school year and accepted the resignation of Nikki Pruemer as high school girls’ track coach, effective Sept. 12.

FYI Hoopeston Area school board members will meet next at 6:30 p.m. Oct. 17 in the Hoopeston Area High School library.
