Area marching bands to compete

Community invited to Viking Invitational

DANVILLE – An annual tradition that draws the community to Danville High School is set for next Saturday.

The Danville High School Instrumental Music Boosters will host the 40th annual Danville Viking Invitational Marching Band competition from 4-8:30 p.m. Sept. 28 at Ned Whitesell Field.

DHS band director Kent Krause said the competition was moved to the evening this year because “the schools had less conflicts that way.”

Thirteen visiting bands from across central Illinois will perform 7- to 11-minute shows during the competition. The first band performs at 4 p.m., with an awards presentation at 8:15 p.m.

“It’s fantastic and it celebrates the students who work very hard ... no matter what school they attend,” Krause said. “It’s a great community event.”

Each of the 13 bands will compete and be evaluated by a panel of music professionals on the musical and visual aspects of their performance.

Longtime Danville band director Jon Dugle, who will be one of the judges at the competition, will be recognized at the event for his contributions to the music heritage at DHS.

“We’re very excited about that. He was very successful during his tenure here,” Krause said of Dugle. “A lot of students’ parents had him as a band director.”

The DHS marching band, Band of Vikings, will perform at 8 p.m. at the end of the competition, but will not be eligible to win any awards because it is the exhibition band.

The DHS marching band’s theme is Americana, Krause said. The title of the band’s performance is “Postcards: An American Journey, Featuring the Music of Craig Fitzpatrick.”

First-, second- and third-place awards will be given in four classes of bands — A, AA, AAA and AAAA.

Krause said this year AAAA was added to the various classes of bands because “we wanted bands to be evaluated by comparable band size.”
