Broadcaster honored for years of service

(Continued)

John Paul, former anchor at WCIA and now a journalism professor at the University of Illinois, nominated Quick. Paul serves on the board of governors with the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences Mid-America, based in St. Louis. The organization covers several states in the Midwest, and most past winners have been from large cities.

“Doug has always been passionate about preserving broadcast history,” Paul said. “He’s very, very deserving.”

Someone who’s that interested in preserving the history of TV and radio is rare in this business, he added.

Quick is only the second person from central Illinois to receive the award. Two years ago, former WCIA news director and veteran broadcaster Dave Shaul was inducted into the Silver Circle.

Quick said he’s always amazed when someone young comes up and recognizes him, adding, “It really is an honor to influence and be a part of people’s lives you don’t even know. It’s a terrific responsibility.”

Quick, who lives in northern Vermilion County, tries to make sure the county is represented properly and accurately at WICD. “I try to put a positive spin on things whenever I can,” he said.

Quick has been at the station since 1994, having begun as promotions director. He served as a weather caster on weekend newscasts and on “Sunrise Today.” He also produces and hosts the public affairs feature “Spotlight 15” on WICD and serves as the weeknight weather-caster at WCCU, FOX 27 in Urbana.

His TV career began at Western Illinois University where he co-anchored the Unicom TV service local newscast. Since the early 1980s, Quick also was voice-over and on-camera talent in a number of TV commercials through the facilities of WICD, WAND, WCIA and independent production houses over the years. His radio broadcasting career has taken him from his hometown of Taylorville to Springfield, Decatur, Champaign and Danville.

Quick and his wife of 34 years, Melissa, have two married daughters, Miranda and Mindi and a grandson.
