Oakwood Grade School’s third annual 5K Run and Walk kicks off at 8 a.m. Saturday.
The race will begin and end at Oakwood Grade School.
The event originated with members of the school’s Health and Fitness Committee, who put together a running club for students. The club consists of 100 students from the third through sixth grade.
The seven-week program was started to help fight childhood obesity and to promote a healthy lifestyle.
More than 200 runners, including several running club participants, are pre-registered for the event. The running club students did not have a fee, and will receive a free T-shirt on race day.
All other runners who pre-registered before May 7 also will receive a T-shirt Saturday.
For prospective runners who have not signed up, registration opens at 7 a.m. Saturday. The fee is $15 to participate.
Awards will be presented to the first five female and first five male runners, along with the top five running club students. All runners completing the race will receive a ribbon upon finishing.
All proceeds will go toward the Oakwood Grade School’s Health and Fitness Initiative.
