Citizens to meet with leaders

City schedules series to discuss area projects

DANVILLE — Ward meetings are back in the city.

Thursday marks the first of three upcoming ward meetings in the city where residents can meet in an informal setting and question city officials.

Ward meetings haven’t been conducted for a few years. The city has had a “Coffee Hour” the last couple of years for one-on-one conversations between residents and city officials at city hall.

“The mayor thought it was time to bring (the ward meetings) back with all of the projects going on …,” said human relations administrator Sandra Houston.

Some of those projects include the Fairchild overpass, Bowman Avenue reconstruction, demolitions, Community Development Block Grant programs, Vermilion Street improvements, Danville High School campus improvements, Tax Increment Financing district projects, retail development and other projects, such as sewer projects and the new yard waste site.

Several city department heads will attend the meetings to answer questions, in addition to Mayor Scott Eisenhauer. One city official, city clerk Janet Myers, will retire in June after working for the city for 22 years.

Houston said the format for the meetings this year will be a little different. They will start with a reception first to give people the time to mingle and talk to persons directly, she said. Then there will be meeting where questions will be asked before the group and city officials.

Houston said all residents are invited to attend the meetings.

“People need to come out and voice any concerns …,” Houston said. “This is their opportunity, in an informal setting.”

She added that the ward meetings also allow residents to learn more about city services and the projects going on in their neighborhoods.

Citizens can also forward their concerns or questions before their ward meeting to The e-mails will be addressed at the ward meetings. The e-mails must include the ward meeting the resident plans to attend along with the resident’s name and address.
