Georgetown council OKs fireworks deal

GEORGETOWN — The city’s Fourth of July fireworks show will go on as normal for at least the next three years as aldermen approved a multi-year contract Monday for the annual show.

Mayor Dennis Lucas said the vendor, DCV Imports of Lincoln, had a 10 percent price increase for the same type of show the city has had in the past. That would have meant more than $600 extra per year for the fireworks event.

Aldermen looked at decreasing the length and dynamics of the show, but decided to go with a slightly altered show that will remain around 25-minutes long with nearly non-stop firework displays being shot. It will be nearly the same as in the past, with just some minor cost-saving adjustments.

They approved to spend $6,500 and locked in that price through the July 2015 show.

“If we keep cutting it down because of price, we won’t end up with much of a show,” Lucas said, also noting that they didn’t want to continually pay 10 percent more.

Lucas has said in the past that the show is a well-attended event that brings a lot of people into town who then spend locally in restaurants and gas stations.

Money for the show will be included in the upcoming budget, which is being drafted. The city’s fiscal year ends April 30.
