Toys, comic book shop opens downtown

DANVILLE — At the new toy, comic book and collectible shop downtown, Vintage Villains, one can step back in time seeing vintage toys and video game systems, movie cards and comic books.

There also are newer items, including T-shirts, action figures and other items such as from The Walking Dead and Star Trek.

Partners Chris Perrault, a laid-off FreightCar employee, and Troy Walton have opened the shop, which opened today in the former Bruce Huff Photography business next to Hoarder’s Paradise, at 103 N. Vermilion St.

The shop was formed by combining Perrault’s Boutique Du Freak and Walton’s Timewalk Collectibles.

Both had shops in the old McMillan Grade School in Westville, then stores in the old Diamond Grade School building on Batestown Road.

“It was harder to promote the two shops…,” Perrault said.

But Perrault added they were very successful at the old Diamond Grade School.

Walton has had other shops too downtown and at the mall. Walton has more non-sports cards and different items Perrault didn’t have.

They both had general collectible items in the areas of superheroes, sci-fi, fantasy, horror, video games and music to open one store together.

The combined store name came from a Facebook suggestion.

Perrault and Walton had been looking for a location in the city to have a joint store.

Affordability was a big factor and landlord Peter Blackmon worked with them on the downtown spot.

Perrault said the downtown pedestrian traffic also played a part in their decision to locate downtown.

During the last few months, they have been painting, removing a wall and renovating the space to fit their needs.

The shop has sections of T-shirts, reproduction movie posters, buttons, records and music CDs, horror/sci-fi/anime, VHS movies and DVDs, video games and video game systems — such as Atari and Nintendo, non-sports cards, action figures from movies and television shows and toys from the 1980s and 1990s.

Some movie characters include from Corpse Bride, The Nightmare Before Christmas, Sin City and Candyman.

Other action figures and toys include newer and older Star Wars figures, Transformers and He-Man. Stuffed animals/characters include Rainbow Brite, Alf, Popples and Pound Puppies.

There is a $5 toy area, too, with different figures.

Non-sport cards include Star Trek, older Disney movies and Pixar characters, Castle, True Blood and Vampire Diaries.

Walton said he has non-sport card sets too, in addition to packs of cards.

Walton has been collecting cards, such as Charlie’s Angels and Star Wars cards, since he was 10 years old.

“Non-sports cards have been around longer than sports cards,” Walton said, adding that they started with stage and movie actors.

The shop also has Magic: The Gathering packs and some Yu-Gi-Oh and Pokemon single cards.

There also are special insert cards, such as autograph cards, including some from Star Trek.

In addition, some arcade games are inside the store including Super Pac Man, Blitz, Mortal Kombat 4, Star Wars Trilogy and Jurassic Park III, to play for free.

Perrault also makes some of the items they sell, such as bracelets made from old LPs and horror posters and light switch covers with movie scenes on them.

Eventually, Perrault and Walton would like to set up a lounge area and have card game tables.

Perrault said a lot of local youth have been helping with the shop to get it open as soon as possible for a place to hang out.
