Commissioners seek extension

VEEDERSBURG, Ind. — Fountain County Commissioners will seek a month’s extension to fulfill the requirements for a grant for the new Emergency Medical Services building.

Standing in the entryway of the new building on County Road 50 east of U.S. Route 41 Monday, the commissioners voted 2-1 to ask the Indiana Office of Community and Rural Affairs to extend the Nov. 30 completion date to Dec. 31.

“We are asking for an extension because we don’t have the water and sewer lines in yet,” said commissioner Walt Wilson. “We think we will be done (by Nov. 30), but we want to be sure.”

Commissioners agreed to pay Brad Crain, contractor, $55,301 from the grant funds while holding the rest of the $109,849 bill until completion along with the $4,770 for Matt Holder, architect, and $10,000 for Anita Carpenter, grant writer.

“There is no problem being done by Dec. 31,” Crain said.

Carpenter expects notification of the grant extension by the end of the week.

Commissioner Terry Ellingwood continued to vote against items for the EMS building.

“I was originally for it when it was not on prime property,” he said. Ellingwood preferred a location nearer the recycling center.

Commissioners approved a change order that deducts $4,464 from the project since curbs will not be used in the parking lot. Curb stops will be installed.

Several in attendance questioned rising costs on the project.

“It will be debt-free,” said Richard Klage, chairman of the Fountain County Council. “We will have an itemized list on the project when it is done. We have the money to pay for it without taxes. We are in very good shape financially.”

In other business, commissioners questioned the Fountain County Cemetery Commission’s work at the Jackville Cemetery in Wallace and adjacent landowners.

“I have had complaints,” Wilson told Jasper Fogelman who heads the cemetery commission.

Fogelman was told to contact the commissioners and the county attorney on any matters of dispute.
