New jobs come to city

Manufacturer to produce feed for pigs

DANVILLE — A Danville native is returning with a new business and several new jobs for local residents.

Harry Rothenberger, CEO of HRW Inc. of Paris, plans to locate a portion of his manufacturing company at 1805 E. Voorhees St. Modification work began at the site last month and production is expected to begin in July.

The latest addition to Danville’s manufacturing lineup was announced Wednesday morning by Vermilion Advantage president and CEO Vicki Haugen.

The location of a new manufacturer in the city was first confirmed in late May.

At this point, work is under way to set up production and laboratory equipment in a 10,000-square foot facility that HRW will lease.

Rothenberger, a graduate of Danville High School, has a 28-year history working in the animal feed industry. Once production begins, his business will create a high-quality milk replacement, called Cheese Meal, that is used in feed for baby pigs.

The new HRW facility will start up with one production line and is expected to produce as much as 20 million pounds of Cheese Meal in the first year. The second-year goal is 36 million pounds with the plant designed to produce up to 40 million pounds per year.

“I was born in Danville, grew up and attended school in Danville, graduated from Danville High School and left in 1986 when I was transferred to Champaign by the company for whom I was working,” Rothenberger said in a press release issued Wednesday by Vermilion Advantage. “I have many fond memories of Danville, and even though I left, I have always carried those memories with me, always referring to Danville as my ‘home town.’ … I retired in 2005 with no plans of returning to the business world. Then I was approached by former customers who were not able to get the quality product they needed. They asked what it would take to get me to return to production of the animal feed ingredient.

“With the support and assistance of my wife and children, I agreed to their requests. I immediately thought of Danville because of the agriculture industry here, the support available from Vermilion Advantage and the Danville CDBG funding, and the opportunity to ‘give back’ to the city and community where I have my roots. …”

The plant — a $1.3 million investment for HRW Inc. — will employ as many as 25 workers in the first year. Each shift added is expected to increase employment by 15.

Haugen indicated the project is being funded through First Midwest Bank and the Small Business Administration. City of Danville funding in the amount of $175,000 also is being used to assist with the initial purchase of product inventory.

Applications for first shift work including supervisor, lab technician and production workers are now being accepted at http://www.442jobs.com and at the Illinois Department of Employment Security, 407 N. Franklin St.

Beginning Monday, applications may also be picked up at the plant from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday.
