One suspect is in custody and another being sought in connection with a evening robbery on the west side of Danville.
Vance Laws, 24, of Danville was arrested by city police officers and charged in connection with the incident, which took place just after 8:15 p.m. Monday along Cypress Street.
Police Deputy Director Doug Miller said the victim — a 32-year-old man — was driving south on Cypress when he spotted Laws and another man walking north along the street.
The victim told police he stopped and rolled down the window and began talking to the men, who then asked for a ride, Miller said.
Upon entering the back seat of the victim’s vehicle, the second suspect pulled out a handgun and threatened to shoot the driver if he didn’t hand over his money. The driver complied and the suspects climbed out, fleeing northeast from the scene on foot.
Miller said officers stopped Laws walking on English Street near North Gilbert Street. Laws ran from police, who used a K9 unit to track him to a residence in the 1000 block of North Franklin Street where he was arrested.
Felony charges of armed robbery with a firearm, armed violence, aggravated possession of a stolen firearm, and possession of a controlled substance were filed by the state’s attorney’s office on Tuesday against Laws. His bond is set at $200,000.
Miller said police continue to search for the second suspect in the robbery.
