Kohl’s sees hundreds apply for jobs


DANVILLE — A job fair for Kohl’s ended Wednesday after having hundreds of people apply for about 105 openings at the soon-to-be-open Danville store.

Melissa Taylor, general manager of the Hampton Inn & Suites, 370 Eastgate Dr., where the job fair was conducted, said lots of local residents of all ages are looking for jobs.

Some applicants also put in applications at the hotel, Taylor said, adding that a lot of job applicants also commented they were looking forward to Meijer opening this year, too.

Taylor said Kohl’s will be a nice addition to the city.

“We were glad to have them,” she said about Kohl’s executives and the job fair.

Kohl’s District Manager Stan Kirchgessner said there were interview slots for up to about 600 applicants. Applicants who had scheduled interviews or walk-ins filled out applications at tables and then were taken to another room for group interviews.

Single, stay-at-home mom Katrina Meuser of Danville was a walk-in applicant on Wednesday. She previously worked at Lowe’s and has 20-plus years of customer service work experience.

“I love people,” Meuser said.

“I love Kohl’s just to shop,” she added.

She said she’d love to help customers try out what outfits would work for them.

Getting a job at Kohl’s would help pay the bills, she said about having a 4-year-old at home.

Applicant Cassie Foehrer of Danville hasn’t had a job since 2010.

“It’s hard to find jobs,” she said.

Foehrer, who has fast food experience, was interested in applying for a Kohl’s job. She said she’s been “applying everywhere.” She lives with a roommate to share living expenses, but a job at Kohl’s would help with all her bills.

Another applicant, Christy Wood of Hoopeston said she is looking to change jobs. She’s a certified nursing assistant and now works part-time through in-home care services.

“I’m a people person,” Wood said.

She’s excited about the job opportunities coming to the area.

The Kohl’s job fair was for part-time work only.

The store is scheduled to open on March 3 with a “soft opening” and have a grand opening on March 6.

The five-day job fair was to fill jobs of sales associates, point of sales associates, replenish/merchandising associates, customer service associates, freight unloaders, loss prevention officers and evening ad set associates.

Kohl’s associates receive competitive compensation, benefits and immediate merchandise discounts.

“We are looking for very upbeat, customer-driver associates,” Kirchgessner said.

Hirings now will be made within the following two weeks. A training process then will occur. About a dozen full-time positions already had been filled for the store. Those employees helped with the job fair.
