County looks ahead to making repairs

DANVILLE — It’s a new year, but a similar set of goals for the Vermilion County Board chairman as the county heads into 2014.

Chairman Gary Weinard entered 2013 with improvements to the county courthouse among other items on the county’s agenda. A little more than 365 days later, and more courthouse renovations remain on the agenda, as well as other capital improvement items.

While a badly leaking roof and one damaged fourth floor courtroom received attention in 2013, the building’s elevators, security system and other fourth-floor courtroom are the projects being looked at already for this upcoming year, Weinard said.

“The courthouse continues to need some attention,” he said.

This is in addition to renovations at the Vermilion County Health Department as well as the county’s animal shelter. The extent of what can and will be done, however, remains up in the air.

“As with everything, money is the limiting factor,” Weinard said.

He said a committee is looking at prioritizing the renovations and improvements for the health department while a meeting in mid-December has already looked at the potential for a courthouse security system. Weinard described the current system as “antiquated.”

The same description can be used to describe the century-old building’s elevator system, which is 15 years obsolete, Weinard said. The intent is to upgrade the cabs and controls in order to avoid future elevator failures.

While the roof of the courthouse roof was repaired during the summer of 2013, the damage that resulted from the prior leaks remains an issue. Weinard said extensive water damage from the leaks will be fixed in courtroom 4A as well as new seating and carpeting installed.

For the Vermilion County Animal Shelter, Weinard said general upgrades are being considered, including the heating and air conditioning for the building located along Catlin-Tilton Road.

The 2014 year will mark Weinard’s second full year as chairman of the county board.

“We had some positive things happen this past year,” Weinard said. “I’m hoping for more positives this coming year.”
