Alderman organizes praise, worship events

DANVILLE — Two upcoming events are seeking church and community members to come together for fellowship.

The first is “Take a Young Black Male to Worship Day.”

On Sunday, Aug. 11, Ward 1 Alderman Kevin Davis and others are encouraging citizens to take a young black male to worship at your church, mosque, temple, synagogue or place of worship in your community.

“On this day I am calling all fathers, stepfathers, foster fathers, grandfathers, godfathers, uncles, brothers, significant male caregivers, next-door neighbors, mentors, ministers, pastors, deacons, trustees, imams, rabbis and other men, and women, to ‘Take A Black Male To Worship,’” Davis said.

He invites anyone and any church to be involved, citywide.

The other event is “Praise in the Temple Plaza” on Aug. 17.

Davis stated in an announcement, “In our ever-changing society, culture is a dominating factor. Culture infuses everything from values to lifestyle and family structure.

“Social characteristics can be affected by culture. Therefore, I am requesting that the African American Christian culture come forth. By incorporating the Christian cultures into our community, the churches of our city can work together and celebrate the various diversities. Also, we can battle culture shock and fulfill God’s will of spreading the gospel to all,” he said.

“Praise in the Plaza” is an event presented by Davis and sponsored by Downtown Danville Inc.

This year, the event will feature choirs, solo singing, spoken word, poems, praise dancing, an arts and crafts area, farmers market area and more.

This will be a day of praise celebration at downtown’s Temple Plaza from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 17.

Davis encourages all churches, pastors, ministers, evangelists, laypersons and missionaries to take the time and join in this community event.

To participate and for more information, contact Davis at 260-4393 or e-mail at kevin.davis@cityofdanville.org and kmdavis357@hotmail.com.

Davis said he looks forward to seeing the public participate and having people actively involved with the enhancement and cultural growth of the city of Danville.

“I am trying to bring more positive things to the community, for the betterment of the community,” Davis said.

DDI executive director Dana Schaumburg said Temple Plaza is a great gathering place that more and more people are using.
