- Have a home fire escape plan and practice the plan at least twice a year. Homeowners should also install smoke alarms and test the alarms monthly.
- Keep fixed and portable space heaters at least 3 feet from anything that can burn and turn off heaters when you leave the room. Candles need a 1-foot buffer and should be blown out when leaving.
- Inspect electrical cords and replace ones that are cracked, damaged, have broken plugs or loose connections.
- Keep matches and lighters up high and out of reach of children.
