UPDATE: I-74, other roads still dangerous Wednesday

Snow turning to slush

DANVILLE — At 10:45 a.m. Wednesday, the Illinois State Police issued an update regarding local traffic conditions:

Illinois State Police District 10 officials are advising the roadways in District 10 continue to be extremely dangerous. Counties include Vermilion, Champaign, Douglas, Coles, Edgar, Moultrie, Piatt, Shelby and Macon. Interstate-74, Interstate-57, Interstate-72, State Routes and US Routes remain dangerous with snow-packed drifts, icy patches and now partial melting snow/slush as temperatures have climbed enough for the salt to start working. Motorists traveling on Interstate 57 continue to slide off the roadway into the median and ditches.

At 2:15 p.m. Tuesday, the Illinois State Police issued an update regarding local traffic conditions:

The roadways in District 10 continue to be emergency travel only. Counties include: Vermilion, Champaign, Douglas, Coles, Edgar, Moultrie, Piatt, Shelby and Macon. Interstate-74, Interstate-57 and Interstate-72 are extremely dangerous with snow-packed drifts and icy patches.

Motorists traveling on Interstate 57 continue to slide off the roadway into the median and ditches. State Routes, US Routes, county highways and township roads are experiencing drifting snow, snow-packed drifts and icy patches.

Motorists should use caution, reduce speed and allow for extra travel time. Motorists are encouraged to keep an emergency kit in their vehicle. Travel conditions continue to be life-threatening.

Interstate-74, Interstate-57 and Interstate-72 are extremely dangerous with snow-packed drifts and icy patches. Motorists should use caution, reduce speed and allow for extra travel time. Many State Routes, US Routes, county highways and township roads are impassable and/or are closed due to drifting snow and abandoned vehicles blocking the roadway.

Travel conditions are life-threatening, and anyone traveling on the roadways is in life-threatening danger.  If motorists have vehicle problems, a disabled vehicle and/or crash, assistance may not arrive before they succumb to the extreme cold. Temperatures and wind chills can quickly cause hypothermia and death.
