Group plans trip to Salt Lake City library

Have you ever considered visiting the largest genealogical library in the world? If so, you may want to consider going with the National Genealogical Society’s trip to the Family History Library in Salt Lake City, Utah, scheduled for Jan. 30 to Feb. 6.

Besides having access to more than 2 million rolls of microfilm, hundreds of thousands of microfiche, and a huge collection of genealogical books, those who take this trip will have the benefit of two experienced trip directors to help. The library is open 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily except Monday, when it closes at 5 p.m. It is closed on Sundays and certain holidays.

The trip is limited to 30 attendees and the deadline for registering is Jan. 1. Full details are available on the NGS Web site at www.ngsgenealogy.org. What a great way to give your genealogical research a boost in 2011!

Family heirlooms

Family photos, letters and other heirlooms are “out there” on the Internet; however, it may take some detective work to find them. EBay (http://www.ebay.com) is an easy source, once your registration (free) has been completed. For instance, a search can be made on a surname followed by the word genealogy. There were none pertaining to my maiden name, Feistel, but it is possible to be notified if a new item matches this search. A search for “family photo Illinois” (without the quotation marks) produced 55 items; “family photo New York,” 111 items; “family photo Richardson,” 57. “Richardson genealogy,” eight. It’s then interesting to scroll through the items.

It’s challenging to experiment with many different possible search options. A local reader has told me of a site connected with eBay called Mom Threw it Away at http://stores.ebay.com/MomThrewItAway-Collectibles. Search for Illinois photos and be surprised at the number available.
