ROUNDUP - Few accidents reported due to ice

DANVILLE — Despite the treacherous weather Tuesday night, area police departments reported few traffic incidents and no serious accidents.

Captain Dennis Wood of the Vermilion County Sheriff’s Department said, “Other than a couple of vehicles in the ditch, so to speak, we haven’t had anything major.

“This is our third or fourth weather situation; we’re right where we should be,” Wood said. “Everyone is doing a pretty good job.”

Illinois and Indiana State Police concurred with Wood’s analysis of the situation.

The exception was Vermillion County, Indiana, where a sheriff’s spokesperson said roads there were slick and described them as “a flat sheet of ice (Tuesday) night and (Wednesday) morning.”

In fact, Vermillion County emergency personnel and state police responded to the scene of an accident at 8:35 a.m. EST Wednesday in Clinton on North Main Street near Indiana Route 63. Two injured women were rescued from a vehicle following an accident Wednesday morning in Clinton, Ind.

The women, Melanie Asmussen, 47, and her daughter, Lisa Cupstid, age 27, both of Cayuga, were extricated from the vehicle and taken to West Central Community Hospital in Clinton. Cupstid suffered head and back injuries in the crash.

According to the Indiana State Police, Asmussen was driving a 1990 GMC van south on North Main Street when the vehicle began to spin on the ice-covered road. The van left the road, traveling down an embankment and struck a section of trees before coming to rest on its side.

It took almost 45 minutes to rescue the women from the vehicle.

No citations were issued in connection with the crash.

Man arrested for reckless driving in the 3200 block of North Vermilion Street.

$80 in cash stolen in the 100 block of Fairchild Street.

Domestic battery in the first block of Green Acres. Street.

Tuesday, 9:45 a.m. — At the intersection of English and Gilbert streets involving Jacqueline Wilson, 82, of Bismarck, and Carolyn S. Rogers, 70, of Danville. Wilson was ticketed for failure to yield.

Tuesday, 4:30 p.m. — At the intersection of Griffin and Main streets, involving Daniel Lee Hufford, 24, of the 900 block North Griffin Street, and Sylvia L. Whippo, 31, of Danville. Hufford was ticketed for failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident.

Tuesday, 7:36 p.m. — At the intersection of North Vermilion Street and Chester Avenue, involving Travis S. Brandon, 23, of the 2300 block of East Road, and Jessica L. Handzel, 23, of Danville. Brandon was ticketed for failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident.
