Rossville picks firm to build water plant

ROSSVILLE Village board members awarded a contract for the construction of a new water treatment plant on Monday night.

The contract was awarded to G.A. Rich and Sons of Deer Park who was the low bidder for the project at $726,500 plus an additional $13,480 for a concrete block building.

The high bid for the project was $1.1 million by White Construction Co., of Clinton, Ind. There were a total of nine bidders for the project, with Rich and Son¡¦s bid being 32 percent over the engineer¡¦s estimate and the high bidder being 100 percent more than the engineer¡¦s estimate.

The engineering firm of Sodemann and Associates of Champaign had estimated the cost for the water treatment plant to be $550,000.

The village has received a grant from the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Development for $350,000 toward the project. The balance of the project will be paid with a loan from the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency.

Mayor Terry Prillaman expects work to begin in the spring.

In other action, trustees:

ƒÞ Awarded annual safety awards of $100 each to full-time village employees and $50 each to part-time village employees.

ƒÞ Set the dates for the 10 paid holidays for village employees for 2009.

ƒÞ Approved a contract with Leemon Enterprises of Hoopeston to repair the roofs on village-owned buildings at 115 and 117 E. Attica Street and to install gutters and downspouts for $6200.

ƒÞ Approved the annual tax levy for $20,854. The levy will remain the same as last year.

ƒÞ Approved an ordinance to repeal a previous ordinance that banned parking on East Attica Street from 2-6 a.m.

ƒÞ Heard resident Richard Lee on the need to spur new home construction in the village. Lee suggested the village buy lots in existing subdivisions and then resell them for $1 to try and boost new home construction.

WHAT¡¦S NEXT

The Rossville Village Board will meet at 7 p.m. Jan. 19 in the muniicpal building.
