N. Vermillion changes grading system

CAYUGA, Ind. The North Vermillion School Board approved a request Monday night from Holly Wheaton, elementary principal, to change the grading system in the primary grades to reflect letter grades.

The school has been using the O, S and U system for outstanding, satisfactory and unsatisfactory.

Superintendent Michael Turner said the change would indicate more clearly how the students are performing in the content and special areas and would alleviate any confusion.

Wheaton said the O, S and U grades will continue to be used for handwriting, since it is not part of the honor roll.

The grade system will change with the next report card.

In other business, board members:

-- Hired Daniel Martin as the second elementary student council sponsor.

-- Will allow bus drivers to bid on routes on the 2009-10 through 2012-1013 routes with school buses no older than 12 years at the end of the contact.

COVINGTON, IND

Police conduct annual coat drive.


The city council learned Monday night from Police Chief Larry Weber that the police department is having its annual coat drive.

Coats in clean and good condition can be donated at the Covington city building.

Weber also said that the annual shop with a cop event will be Dec. 17. The police department is accepting donations from individuals and businesses for the event.

In other business, councilmen:

-- Approved the request from city workers to work a half day on Christmas Eve and then have the day after Christmas off. The request was approved for this year only.

-- Learned that the last day for curbside leaf pick up will be Nov. 26. After that, leaves will have to be bagged.

3 seats up on Shiloh School Board.


The Shiloh School Board learned Monday night that three seats are up in the April 7 election.

Terms expiring are those of Kim Brown, Samantha Hutchinson and Tony Kile.

Petitions for the seats are available from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the unit office.

In other business, board members:

-- Hired Heather Tarkington as junior high volleyball coach and Amber Grenda as junior Beta sponsor.

-- Set the working cash bonds hearing for 6:30 p.m. Dec. 15; tax levy hearing, 6:45 p.m. Dec. 15.



WHAT’S NEXT

The North Vermillion School Board moved its Dec. 15 meeting to 7:30 p.m. EST Dec. 22 at the superintendent’s office.
