Three arrested in weekend shooting

Victim remains in critical condition

DANVILLE — Three people are in custody in connection with a weekend shooting that hospitalized a Danville woman.

Danville Director of Public Safety Larry Thomason announced the arrests of Deontae Bryant, 17, and Ochiel Keys, 18, and a 16-yer-old male in a press release today.

Bryant and Keys were arrested Monday at Danville High School and were booked at the Public Safety Building on preliminary charges of home invasion and armed robbery.

The juvenile male was arrested at around 8:30 a.m. Tuesday in the 1100 block of Fowler Avenue. He was taken into custody by city police with the assistance of the U.S. Marshal’s office. The 16-year-old, whose name was not released, was taken to the Juvenile Detention Center on charges of home invasion and armed robbery.

The trio was arrested as a result of an investigation into a home invasion during the weekend that resulted in the shooting of a 28-year-old woman in the 1700 block of Glenwood Drive.

Officers responding to the scene found the woman had been shot in the abdomen area after she reported two subjects broke into her home. There were other people present but uninjured at the time of the shooting.

The woman, who has not been identified, was taken to Provena United Samaritans Medical Center before being transferred to a Champaign-Urbana hospital. She was listed in critical condition Tuesday afternoon, according to Thomason.

According to court records, both Keys and Bryant were charged with two counts of home invasion while the 16-year-old male had two felony counts of home invasion as well as charges of aggravated battery and aggravated discharge of a firearm.

State’s Attorney Randy Brinegar said the 16-year-old was expected to be charged as an adult in the case.

Bryant and Keys were arraigned Tuesday, and a preliminary hearing scheduled for Dec. 3.

The home invasion charges are Class X felonies with special penalties that increase the potential sentence, if found guilty.
