School, church to mark homecoming

COVINGTON, Ind. — Covington Christian School is marking its 30th year with a special event.

The school is combining with First Baptist Church for a harvest homecoming.

“We are excited,” said Marsha Wilkinson, a member of the church and the school board. “We have sent out invitations. The idea originated from the school since it is 30 years old this year.”

Former students, teachers and principals will return, along with former members of the church.

“We want to make this a reunion,” said Judy Rennaker, administrator of the school. “We are also making this a fundraiser.”

Alumni are invited to an open house from 7-8:30 p.m. EST Nov. 13 at the school, which is a part of the church at 518 Fifth St.

At 10 a.m. Nov. 14, the Rev. Joe Humrichous, current pastor of the church, will interview the Rev. Dr. Gregg Curtis in the church auditorium.

Curtis started the school in 1979 when he was pastor. Curtis is pastor of Stithton Baptist Church in Radcliff, Ky. He is the CEO/founder of Doxa Inc.-Christian radio and has been chaplain at the children’s hospital in Denver, Colo. He is author of “Why All the Suffering?” and several magazine articles in national publications.

Curtis will speak at a dinner at 5:30 p.m. Nov. 14 at the Beef House Banquet Center. Reservations must be made through the school office by Saturday.

The worship service at 9:30 a.m. Nov. 15 at the church will feature three former pastors or school administrators: the Rev. Glenn M. Ray Jr., the Rev. Warren Allen and the Rev. Alan Carson Sr.

Ray, pastor of the Maranatha Baptist Church in Lansing, Mich., was a teen in the church who helped build and establish youth camps and took an active part in several youth outreach programs. A graduate of Bob Jones University, he is the son of the Rev. Glenn Ray Sr., who served the church for many years.

Allen, pastor of Fellowship Baptist Church in Linton, taught elementary and junior high students at Covington Christian School from 1985 to 1987. From 1989 to 1995 he served as administrator of the school, assistant pastor working with teens and as interim pastor in 1995.

Carson, a former pastor, serves as senior pastor at the Merson Church in Gobles, Mich. He has a bachelor’s degree in Bible from Northland International University as well as a master’s degree in biblical studies and a doctorate in pastoral theology.

A harvest carry-in dinner will follow the service.

Covington Christian School has 63 students in K-12.
