Police investigate fatal crash near Hoopeston

HOOPESTON — Law enforcement are at the scene this morning of a fatal crash outside Hoopeston.

Illinois State Police are handling the early morning accident, which took place on Illinois Route 9 about a mile west of Hoopeston.

Law enforcement in Vermilion County confirmed this morning that one person was killed in the crash. Another was injured and taken to an area hospital for treatment.

The victim, a Hoopeston Area High School student, was identified this morning on the school's local cable channel as Michael Symmonds.

According to Vermilion County Coroner Peggy Johnson,the crash was between a vehicle and a semi. Symmonds was pronounced dead at 6:45 a.m. at Hoopeston Community Memorial Hospital.

The name of the injured person has not been released. He was airlifted to Urbana.
