DACC to discuss changes at Mary Miller gym

DANVILLE — Danville Area Community College trustees will discuss preliminary renovation drawings for the west entrance of the Mary Miller Center at their meeting Tuesday.

The drawings include handicap accessibility at the entrance. The building is accessible to disabled people through other entrances of the building and is compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act.

Mike Cunningham, director of administrative services for the college, said renovations might include aesthetic improvements as well, but trustees will ultimately decide how much work will go into the project.

Exterior changes could make the center look more like the other DACC buildings. The center was built in 1972.

“I’m not pursing it until they decide they want to look at the initial design,” Cunningham said.

“It’s a recommendation to see if we can proceed. If they like the idea, then we’ll go back to the drawing board and do a little more detail.”

Also at the meeting, the board will vote on purchasing a 1932 Roadster Low Boy kit car roller package.

Vice President of Instruction Dave Kietzmann said the package is a part of a car that auto mechanics classes and other students will work on throughout the year.

Last year, students revamped a Mitsubishi convertible.

“This year, as a class project, the instructors would like to build a street rod,” he said.

“Last time on the project, the auto body students, auto mechanics students and the electronics students worked on that project jointly. I’d assume all those will be involved again.”

COMING UP

The next regular meeting of the Danville Area Community College board of trustees will be at 7 p.m. Tuesday in the DACC board room, Vermilion Hall, Room 302. Prior to the meeting, the board will eat dinner at 5:45 p.m. in the board room. Faculty members will demonstrate a Smart Board at 6:20 p.m. in Lincoln Hall, Room 106.The public is welcome to attend.

A public hearing will be at 7:05 p.m. on selling $1 million in funding bonds for technology upgrades.
