DANVILLE —
One person was taken to the hospital following an apartment fire Thursday night.
Fire Deputy Director Bobby Lillard said a resident in 501 N. Hazel St. was taken by Medix to Provena United Samaritans Medical Center following a fire at the building.
The person and two others not taken by ambulance were treated for smoke inhalation as a result of the blaze. No other injuries were reported among the six occupants of the two-story building.
The fire was reported at 9:32 p.m. Thursday and firefighters arriving on the scene could see flames on south side of the building on the second floor.
Lillard said a couple people from the lower floor of the building who were unaware of the fire had to be evacuated
Firefighters worked to knock down the blaze from the inside at first. But they were pulled from the building after the structure roof became unstable. Part of the roof eventually caved in on the second floor of the building.
The cause and specific origin of the blaze is still under investigation. Lillard said the state fire marshal’s office along with a K9 crew are expected to help with the fire investigation.
He said it was too early to discern whether or not the fire was suspicious in nature.
Damages to the seven-apartment structure are estimated at $85,000 — $20,000 for the inside and the remainder for the exterior of the building.
