Indiana runner suffers heart attack

STAFF REPORT

DANVILLE One racer died during the 17th annual Howl at the Moon run/walk at Kennekuk County Park.

Scott Hathaway, 52, of Logansport, Ind., suffered a heart attack just as he passed the 2-mile marker on the course, roughly around 7 a.m. Saturday.

Deb Reddy, who was working the aid station at the race, said the heart attack was not heat related, given the time it happened.

Hathaway was well known as a runner in Vermilion County, Reddy said, coming across the state line to run for as many at seven or eight years.

Reddy said the middle-aged man was very healthy, taking care of himself through eating right and exercising.

“He died doing what he loved doing,” said Reddy, who called 911 when Hathaway collapsed in the race.

Hathaway was running alongside an experienced crowd when he had his heart attack, with an emergency room doctor, emergency medical technician and three nurses nearby. They worked on him until the ambulance arrived at the scene, Reddy said.

Kickapoo Fire Protection District Assistant Chief Josey Jordan said racers performed CPR on Hathaway. He then was taken to Provena United Samaritans Medical Center.

Afternoon heat led to one medical situation during the race. Reddy said a runner was taken to the hospital after becoming dehydrated. He is expected to be OK.
