Rossville seeks comments on buildings

Public meeting slated for July 31

ROSSVILLE — The Rossville Village Board wants to hear from residents about plans for the village-owned downtown buildings.

The board set a public meeting for 6 p.m. July 31 at the Rossville–Alvin Grade School gymnasium. The board will be prepared to answer questions from the audience.

Mayor Terry Prillaman set Aug. 22–23 as dates the village will collect used tires. The tires will then be taken to the Vermilion County fairgrounds on Sept. 3 when Vermilion County Recycling will hold a used tire collection day.

In other board action, trustees:

-- Learned the sand filter at the sewer treatment plant is clogged with grease and oil. Prillaman said it would be cleaned and Conagra would be billed for the work, since the grease and oil are from the plant.

-- Learned the 15-day public comment period regarding the proposed water treatment plant improvements has passed with no comments received. Appropriate documentation has been forwarded to the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency.

According to the IEPA timetable, bids are to be let in August with construction tentatively to start in November.

-- Learned the proposed agreement with Conagra to allow them to close a portion of Creative Way has been delayed due to contract language differences that Conagra’s legal department had made to the original contract. Village officials insist a gate large enough to allow farm machinery to pass through be installed, since farm machinery has always had access to the street in the past.

-- Approved the closing of East Attica Street for the Labor Day Street Bazaar. The street will be closed from 6 p.m. Aug. 29 to 5 p.m. Sept. 1.

-- Urged residents to sign up for budget billing for natural gas bills. Estimates are that natural gas prices may increase from 30 to 50 percent this winter. Residents may sign up at the village office.

-- Learned from Police Chief William Shannon that the new police vehicle has arrived and has been stenciled. It is now at Barbeck Communications in Tilton to have lights, siren and radios installed. The vehicle is a 2008 Dodge Durango and was purchased through the state purchasing program.
