Fire department seeks donations

Electronic message board to benefit Georgetown

GEORGETOWN — At Monday night’s Georgetown City Council meeting, Alderman Tom Adair informed the council that the Georgetown Fire Department seeks donations for an electronic public message board.

Adair said the estimated cost of the message board is $20,000. All the money for the message board will be raised through donations. Adair told the council if anyone would like to make a donation to contact Rex Hacquet of the fire department.

Mayor Darrell Acord told the council the fireworks display on July 4 went well. Acord thanked Alderman Kim Shrout for his work in setting up and setting off the fireworks.

In other council action:

--Heard Acord announce there will be a finance committee meeting with the full council at 6 p.m. July 8 to go over the city audit.

--Approved spending $730 plus expenses to send city employees Tony Ellis and Ed Shirley to the Illinois Potable Water Supply Operators Association conference to be held in September in Springfield. The employees will attend for two days.

--Approved the purchase of a new 30-horsepower pump and electric motor for $7,909 plus freight from Midwest Electric Motor of Danville for one of the city water wells. The pump and electric motor currently in use will be repaired and kept as a back up as part of the city’s preventative maintenance program.

--Approved the payment of $18,864 to Vermilion County for the city’s share of preliminary engineering costs for the West West Street road project.

The payment will be made with Motor Fuel Tax funds. This completes the city’s share of the preliminary engineering costs. The state has bid the project and will be awarding the contract by Aug. 13.

--Approved a building permit for a new roof at 209 W. Ninth St.

--Approved a fence permit for a 5-foot ornamental aluminum fence at 606 S. Seminary St.

--Heard Acord advise the council that there are several building projects going on in town, but there have been very few building permits issued.

Acord asked the aldermen to keep their eyes open and report any building permit infractions to village employee Tony Ellis.
