Village set for holiday events

POTOMAC — The village of Potomac is sponsoring an Independence Day celebration Saturday.

A parade at 11 a.m. will start at the Potomac Grade School and follow U.S. Route 136 through town and end at the Millie Curtis Park. Parade entry forms are available by calling the village office at 987-6900 during the day or contact Connie Highfill at 987-6131 in the evening.

The village president and board of trustees will grill hot dogs and hamburgers for the public from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the community building at 310 W. State St. For a freewill donation, you can enjoy a hamburger, hot dog, potato chips and drinks.

Bluegrass music by JR Country will be from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the Millie Curtis Park Pavilion. The Potomac Community Foundation will honor the “Volunteer of the Year” for his or her service to the community at 1:30 p.m.

For the children, there will be free events all day. The Big Bounce Company will provide a bounce house, obstacle course and the new rocket. Old-fashioned children’s games will be from 1-1:30 pm., including tug of war, sack races or water balloon toss. The American Legion will man the dunk tank. For area wrestling fans, a group of wrestlers will set up a ring and microphone to entertain from 2-5 p.m.

Vendor spaces will be available to sell their wares or provide an activity by calling Marguerite Bailey at 987-6939. Receive a 10-by-10-foot space for $25. No food vendors.

The Armstrong High School Honor Society and Scholastic Bowl will sponsor bingo for prizes from 1-5 p.m. in the community building. A coed softball tournament will be played on Saturday and Sunday on the baseball field at the park. For softball tournament information, call Gary Davis at 595-5463.

New this year will be live music by the band Past Due from 6-9 p.m. at the Potomac Grand School before the fireworks display. Fireworks will begin at dusk grade school baseball diamond. The Hoopeston Regional Health Center, which donated $7,500 for the fireworks display, sponsors the display.

Immediately after the fireworks, join the party at the MainSource Bank parking lot where a DJ will play favorite tunes.

11:30 a.m.: Bluegrass music by JR Country, park pavilion.

1-1:30 p.m.: Old-fashioned children’s games.

1-5 p.m.: Bingo.

1:30 p.m.: Announcement of volunteer of the year.

2-5 p.m.: Wrestling, park.

6-9 p.m.: Music by Past Due band, grade school.

Dusk: Fireworks grade school baseball diamond; dance following at MainSource Band parking lot.
