Police ask for help to solve burglaries

CAYUGA, Ind. — Law enforcement in one Indiana County is telling people to keep a sharp eye out as an investigation continues into a number of daytime burglaries.

Vermillion County Sheriff Bob Spence said his department is “diligently” looking into a number of burglaries reported around the northern end of the Vermillion County during the last month. He couldn’t provide an exact number of incidents connected with the investigation.

According to Spence, investigators have a situation where video evidence could be involved, so a description of any suspects in the case is not being released as this point.

The burglaries apparently are staying within the county’s borders. Sheriff Bobby Bass in neighboring Fountain County said he had nothing to report in the way of similar daytime burglaries in his county recently.

In the wake of these burglaries, Spence said residents in the northern end of the county should “keep their eyes open” and work together to make sure they don’t become the next victim.

House security is important, he said, recommending residents let someone know when they’re leaving their property and how long they’ll be gone.

“People really do watch their neighbor’s home,” he said, adding they’ll report it if something suspicious is spotted.

“They need to be on their toes,” he said, adding many times people ignore possible signs that are “right under our nose” of a burglary.

People who report what they see can help an investigation.

“We really depend on what people see and hear and witness,” Spence said.
