Camp gets girls ready for business world

STAFF REPORT
Commercial-News

DANVILLE For teenage girls, it’s never too early to learn about the business world.

This summer, girls ages 13-17 will have a chance to explore careers and learn job and life skills at Camp Exec. The camp is being offered by the Girl Scouts of Central Illinois Champaign Regional Service Center.

Registration is being accepted now. Girls do not need to be Girl Scouts in order to attend.

The sessions are July 6-10 at the Bremer Conference Center on the Danville Area Community College campus. Camp Exec has been a popular program in Champaign for four years, but is new to Danville this summer.

“The girls love it,” said Jennifer Brown, who’s in charge of the camp.

She hopes 15 girls sign up for the Danville camp.

Some of the highlights of Camp Exec are the opening day, when girls learn to greet and shake hands and work as part of a team. Girls also will take a True Colors personality tests to better understand themselves and learn to relate to others.

As part of the camp they will produce portfolios, resumes, and “business” cards and participate in a bad and good example fashion show about appropriate dress for the job.

Camp Exec concludes on July 10 with a business meal facilitated by an etiquette expert who will teach do’s and don’ts, followed by a presentation for friends and family.

Job skills covered include writing a resume, interviewing for a job, public speaking, meeting and greeting, time management, financial management and more. Career exploration groups facilitated by local business women will cover the gamut from retail, clerical, trades, public safety, and communications to entrepreneurship and medical careers.

The cost is $35 and some scholarships are available for those who qualify financially.

FYI

To register for Camp Exec, call Jennifer Brown at 328-5112, ext 217, or e-mail jbrown@girlscouts-gsci.org. Early registrations are encouraged.
