IDEM seeks input on Harrison plans

Steel company wants to expand its landfill

COVINGTON, Ind. — The Indiana Department of Environmental Management will have a public information meeting at 5:30 p.m. EDT today in the community room of the Fountain County Courthouse.

The purpose is to explain Harrison Steel Castings Inc.’s restricted waste landfill expansion. Harrison Steel is seeking approval from IDEM to expand the facility’s Type III Restricted Waste disposal site, which the facility uses for the disposal of foundry sand.

As part of the public participation process, representatives from Harrison Steel, an Attica firm, will explain its plan.

Additionally, the public has until 5 p.m. July 14 to mail or hand-deliver written comments concerning the proposed expansion to IDEM at the Office of Land Quality Solid Waste Permits Section, Mail Code 65-45 IGCN 1101, 100 N. Senate Ave., Indianapolis, IN 46204-2251

Senate Ave., Indianapolis, IN, 46204, from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Individuals who plan to visit IDEM to review these documents should call the IDEM Central File Room at (317) 232-8667 to make arrangements beforehand.

A restricted waste site is a landfill for limited types of non-hazardous industrial waste, usually the wastes generated by a single type of industrial activity, often from a single facility. IDEM issues three different types of restricted waste site permits, Types III, II and I, with progressively more stringent levels of monitoring and containment.

IDEM will consider all public comments before making a final decision to approve or deny a permit modification for the facility.
