Local Roundup: Police nab speeders at quick pace

DANVILLE — City police recently put a dent in local speeders — or at least their wallets.

Officers handled out 699 tickets for speeding during the first three months of the department’s Speed Enforcement Program.

That averages out to 233 tickets a month and around 7 tickets per day.

The speeding citations made up the majority of the 968 tickets issued so far in the six-month program. Other citations included seat belt violations, driving without insurance and driving with a suspended or revoked driver’s license.

Speed patrols are scheduled to begin again in July, running through September. The program is funded by the Illinois Department of Transportation with the intent of preventing serious and fatal accidents.

Danville

Monday:

Battery in the 1800 block of East Main Street.

Tuesday:

Forgery and theft at First Midwest Bank, 27 N. Vermilion St.

A man arrested for resisting arrest at Fairchild and Rogers streets.

Unlawful use of a weapon and possession of drug paraphernalia reported at the Danville Inn, 388 Eastgate Drive.

Aggravated battery and mob action reported at English and Chandler streets.

Bicycle stolen in the 1300 block of North Harmon Avenue.

Retail theft at Wal-Mart Supercenter, 4101 N. Vermilion St.

Theft reported at Comfort Inn, 383 Lynch Road.

Wednesday:

A man arrested for domestic battery in the first block of Nicklas Street.

Retail theft at County Market, 2 E. Main St.

Vermilion County

Monday:

Disorderly conduct in the first block of Maplewood Drive.

Tuesday:

Burglary in the 300 block of Benton Street, Rossville.

Burglary in the 200 block of Huffman Street, Georgetown.

Violation of the credit card act in the 13600 block of Tucka Bucka Road.

Property damage in the 600 block of Central Avenue, Tilton.

A man arrested for disorderly conduct in the first block of Maplewood Drive.

Accidents involving tickets or injuries include:

Tuesday, 9:08 p.m. —At 2602 N. Vermilion St. involving Nathaniel Gherna, 18, of the 2400 block of Cedar Court, and Darrell Carpenter, 35, of Danville. Gherna was cited for failure to yield. Both drivers as well as two of Carpenter’s passengers – Melanie Carpenter, 34, and Greyson Carpenter, 12, both of Danville – and Patrick Finley16, of Danville, were taken to Provena United Samaritans Medical Center for treatment before being released.

Tuesday, 9:16 p.m. — At West Fairchild and Walnut streets involving Taylor Pearson, 16, of Georgetown, and Joshua Trussel, 19, of Danville. Pearman was cited for failure to yield.
