COVINGTON, Ind. Heavy rains and flooding over the weekend have left two Fountain County roads closed.

Highway Superintendent Rusty Peevler told the Fountain County Commissioners Monday night that County Road 100 North between U.S. Route 41 and Shale Pit Road and Sand Hill Road off Portland Arch Road north of Covington are closed indefinitely. Both roads will need considerable work before they can be opened.

“We had lots of places where the water was over the road,” Peevler said. He and four employees kept busy getting signs off to mark the flooded roads.

Peevler said 4.8 inches of rain was recorded in the county.

In other business, commissioners:

-- Gave approval to Green Minds Fountain County to sponsor a farmers market from 3-6 p.m., EDT Friday from June through October on the courthouse lawn.

“We want to promote local foods,” said Linda McGurk, a spokeswoman for the group. “We thought it would be visible on the courthouse lawn.”

-- Will go to the county council for an additional $13,000 appropriation for overtime funds in the E-911 budget.

-- Approved bituminous and liquid asphalt bids from Milestone of Lafayette and Emilscoat of Urbana, Ill.

-- Will allow National Guardian to explain a dental insurance plan to employees.

-- Gave final approval to employee handbooks which will go into effect July 1.
