Westville paves way for street repairs

Village to use Motor Fuel Tax money

WESTVILLE — At the meeting of the Westville Village Council on Tuesday night, Mayor Jeff Slavik informed the council that bids for the 2008 street repair program will be opened on June 20.

The street repair program is funded by Motor Fuel Tax money.

Also at Tuesday night’s meeting, Slavik presented the council with an agreement for engineering work to be done on the erosion problems affecting the Andracki and Ghibaudy properties.

The engineering work is not to exceed $5,000. Once the engineering work is completed and a plan for controlling the erosion is developed, it must be submitted to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers for approval.

In other council action:

-- Approved the hiring of Wayne Wait as a part-time police officer. Wait comes to Westville with 14 years of experience as a Georgetown police officer.

-- Learned Water Superintendent Mike Bennett is making an increased effort to collect delinquent water bills.

-- Learned eight property violation letters were sent out, with most of them for tall grass.

-- Learned the depot has received a $150 grant from Keep Vermilion County Beautiful and will use the money to plant flow-ers around the depot.

-- Awarded a contract to Miller Tree Service of Indianola for $850 to remove one tree and top two other trees in the park. The other bidders were Miller Tree Service of Danville for $1,050 and Klugow Tree Service of Westville for $900.

-- Learned the park has been hit by vandalism already this spring with a pitcher’s mound dug up and stolen as well as the concession stand broken into.
