Veedersburg improves Hub Park

VEEDERSBURG, Ind. — The town council encourages residents to visit Hub Park to check out the improvements.

“Come to the park and see what we’ve been doing,” said Councilman Bob Barker. He suggested they check out the new painting at the cabin, flower boxes and the repaired playground equipment in the park. The new curbs constructed around the ball diamond are also doing their job of keeping the rain from the parking lot off the field.

Improvements are ongoing at the park and the redevelopment commission will next be reviewing a bid for a retractable window at the concession stand.

In other business, council members:

-- Learned from Jim Abernathy, dog catcher, that he has been in contact with the animal-control officers from Attica and Covington on solving the dog problem that exists in all three communities. The problem being: What to do with dogs after they have been held for 10 to 14 days and nobody claims or adopts them. They all agreed that they would deal with the problem themselves instead of sending them to a third-party animal-rescue group.

-- Approved a $2,687 repair to a spare pump at the sewer plant from Midwest Electric of Danville. Wastewater superintendent Connie Sichts said the repair is guaranteed for a year. Sichts explained the repair usually lasts longer than a year. The plant has two pumps in operation for the RAS lift station, but Sichts said that she likes to keep a spare on hand since they get such heavy use.

-- Learned from street superintendent Paul Keeling that more complaints have been received about the mowing crew hired by the town. Keeling promised he will speak with them.

-- Will send a formal letter to Campbell’s Excavating of Veedersburg to repair sewer work that was previously completed on North Walnut Street.

-- Discussed installing weight- or age-limit signs around the new playground equipment for safety purposes.

-- Approved repairs to the town’s Dodge police car’s struts by Veedersburg Shell.

-- Approved Fountain County 4-H shooting sports using the old shooting range near the Veedersburg sewer plant on the first and second weekends in June and possibly the third and/or fourth weekend if needed due to rain.

-- Learned that the summer park program probably will not be put on this year due to funding. Darla Nine, the summer park-program director, will work on funding for next year’s program beginning in September. Marcie Roark, Veedersburg zoning board administrator, suggested the summer park program go on using volunteers and donations from the community. Roark said she would like the program to continue this summer.

-- Purchased a trailer from Glascock Equipment & Sales of Veedersburg for $6,746 after a trade-in and discounts. Barker said the trailer has an 18,000- to 40,000-pound capacity and will be used by the town’s electric department to transport skid steer. The trailer could also be used to transport a street sweeper if the redevelopment committee approves its purchase.

-- Hired Tyler Richter and Anthony Hinote as summer help for the town’s street department. George Blackwell, who worked for the town electric department last year, will return this summer to help the electric crew.

-- Hired Dana Knutti as the meter reader for the water department. Bob Olstead will train Knutti as the meter reader.
