COVINGTON, Ind. Larry Weber will be Covington’s new police chief effective June.

Mayor Brad Crain appointed Weber on Monday night to replace Tony Knecht who is retiring May 31.

Weber has been a Covington police officer for 33 years. Weber said he does not expect to make any changes since Knecht already has the police force running on a good and effective routine.

Councilman Max Keller, a former police chief, said Weber is a “very reliable person for the department.”

Weber thanked the council for their faith and trust in him. Crain also thanked Knecht for his service to Covington.

Knecht has been a Covington police officer for 32 years, 28 years as chief.

The city will advertise for another police officer. Preference will be given to individuals who have already attended the police academy.

In other business, council members:

--Learned from Superintendent Bob Tanner that the city’s spring cleanup is done. The transfer station just west of Covington on U.S. Route 136 was kept open until noon today so the city could finish up the cleanup.

--Learned Tanner will meet with Wessler & Associates engineering firm today to discuss plans for the state’s U.S. 136 project through Covington. Tanner said that besides the water lines, the street lighting in downtown also will need to be included in the planning stages with the engineer.

--Learned from Water Superintendent Phil Dotson that the cleaning and repair work on well number two is now complete.

--Heard Crain express hope the council will make a decision regarding street work at the May 19 meeting. Until the city’s budget is approved officials can’t really make any decisions on street work.
