Veedersburg unhappy with street work

VEEDERSBURG, Ind. — The town council discussed with Milestone representative Ken Walschlager the problems the town has had with last year’s blacktopping work by Milestone.

Street Superintendent Paul Keeling said that last year’s blacktopping is already cracking in some places, that there is uneven jointing and that manhole rings were not installed last year.

Council president Ken Smith said the council “would like to have this rectified.”

Walschlager said that Milestone will return this year and smooth out any uneven places such as where streets meet. The manhole rings were not installed last year, because they had the wrong size of rings at the time. Walschlager also promised that they will fix the cracking and determine what caused the cracking in the first place.

Both Milestone and the town want these issues resolved since more street work is planned by the town for this year.

In other business, town council members:

-- Decided to handle its own dogs instead of sending them to Animal Welfare League of Fountain County. The town has been holding dogs they collect for 10 to 14 days before trying to send them to Animal Welfare League. The problem is that the town has foundat that the league is always full of animals and don’t have room to take any of Veedersburg’s dogs.

Smith asked Stuart Welliever, the town’s attorney, to come up with some kind of legal notice to inform the public that after the two-week period if the animals are not collected by their owners or adopted out, the town can euthanize a dog if necessary.

-- Heard from Lee Ramsey that downtown cruise in dates for this year are the third Saturday of every month from May through October. The cruise ins feature live music and run from 7-10 p.m. Ramsey said that there will be be two family movie nights on June 27 and Sept. 5. A country western night is also in the works, according to Ramsey.

“I’m all about promoting the downtown and community” said Ramsey.

-- Heard from Doug Brown of Brown Equipment of Fort Wayne about the variety of street sweepers they have for sale. Brown Equipment will demonstrate a re-conditioned street sweeper for the town Tuesday.

-- Learned from Keeling that new teeter totters have been built and repair work was done on several existing teeter totters at Sterling Park. Several chains were also replaced on the swings at the park.

-- Heard from Stu Savka of Triad Engineering of Indianapolis. Savka encouraged the town to submit a grant request for storm water drain work. Savka explained that the town only has until June 12 to submit an application to receive any money from the stimulus package. Savka agreed to get some estimates on the possible work the town could do in regard to the storm sewers.

-- Heard from Jeff Brook of Best Equipment of Indianapolis, who is also interested in selling the town a street sweeper.

-- Retracted their motion from the previous meeting to accept trees from Tom Freas. The town was unaware of the strings attached to accepting the trees from Freas, such as not being able to use the town backhoe to get the trees.

-- Welcomed Travis Covault to the town council. Covault fills Chris Rahm’s position.
