Veedersburg hears about park plans

VEEDERSBURG, Ind. — The town council heard from Mike Marshall and Kevin Merryman of the Veedersburg Little League board Tuesday night.

Practice for the new season begins Monday. Merryman and Marshall discussed some improvements that the little league board would like, including underground electricity to the pitcher’s mound for a piece of practice equipment, motion sensor lighting near one of the equipment buildings and other minor improvements.

Marshall also discussed a movable fence in the outfield that could be altered depending on which age group is using the field.

The council discussed the problem of water running off the parking lot at the Hub Park ball diamond and onto the ball field. Councilman Bob Barker suggested installing an asphalt curb along the parking area and the field so that the water is re-directed away from the field.

Barker will contact Matt Hesler of Hesler Paving to look at the problem.

Cuncil president Ken Smith asked Marshall and Merryman to keep the town informed when they are installing new equipment at the parks, such as the new fence if they get it.

In other business, council members:

-- Learned from town superintendent Paul Keeling that the gravel road between the state highway garage and the southern part of the intersection of U.S,. Route 136 and U.S. Route 41 will be paved with asphalt by the town this year.

-- Awarded the town’s mowing contract to GGA Lawn Care of Crawfordsville with a bid of $11,400. The town only received one bid for the mowing contract.

-- Approved a wage increase for John Meadows as the returning assistant at the waste water plant from $9.65 to $11 per hour.

-- Approved an amendment to the sewer use ordinance for Industrial users, specifically Krupp and MasterGuard in Veedersburg. The amendment adjusts the amounts of cyanide allowed in wastewater. Sichts explained that the new limits are a little easier on the industrial users, but should still keep them in check. Lab testing will be easier as well since the previous limits were so low they were difficult to show in tests.

-- Learned from electric superintendent George Gowens that the move from aerial electric lines to underground electric lines has begun at the park.

-- Learned that the town will interview applicants for the meter reader position at 5 p.m. EDT April 14.

-- Hired Richard Burton to open the pool for $500 and to replace the sand in the filters for $100.

-- Announced two resignations. Effective April 1, Bruce Swingle resigns as the zoning administrator after two years on the zoning board. Effective as of this meeting, Chris Rahm resigns his seat on the town council for personal reasons.
